We will be having our unit 5 math test tomorrow. The test focuses on identifying place values of large numbers and decimals. The students completed a review in class today and should look through it and practice similar problems tonight as practice.

Continents and Oceans Quiz Thursday

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that we will be having a quiz on Thursday. The quiz will ask students to locate and label each continent and ocean. As a bonus they may be asked to identify a country in a few of the continents. Each student has been sent home with a study guide they can use to study for the quiz.

Cereal Box Book Report

I sent home a sheet with the students yesterday, January 9th, explaining a book report the students will be working on. The project is due on February 15th. Students should pick out a book that they would like to read and show it to me for my approval. The reading can be done in class as can they cereal box. However, the reading and cereal box construction can also be done at home. Students will have time during independent reading in class to work on the report but it is not something they should count on and should plan on working at home as well.

Mutliplication Folder/Quizzes

You may have noticed that your child brought home a blue folder labeled multiplication. This is a folder to give your student ways to study their multiplication facts. Everyone should be studying their 2x table this week. Each Friday we will have a quiz on the table your child is currently on. If they score 90% or above they will move up to the next table and should study that using the folder as their guide the following week.

Math Test Tomorrow 12/14

Just wanted to let you know that the students will be taking their unit 4 math test tomorrow. They will have a review of the skills from the unit today and will bring that review home to continue to study tonight. This unit focuses mainly on multiplication and division. There will also be some problems where students will need to identify which side of an equation is greater. Area will also be on the test as will some measurement.

Its that time again, time for another Math Test. This test will be on Unit 3 of our Math Book which focuses on measurement, area, and perimeter. The test will be this Thursday. A study guide will come home with your student on Wednesday night.

Shoe Boxes, Paper Towel Tubes, and Projects

I would ask that if you have any extra shoe boxes, paper towel tubes or other art supplies you send them in for some upcoming projects to finalize our Planet and Sound units. Handouts will be going home this week or next with further details on the projects but if you have those supplies please but them to the side because your child will be needing them.

Unit 2 Math Test

The time has come for another unit math test. The students will be taking their test for the second unit on Wednesday October 26th. The tests features addition and subtraction problems, fact extensions (using 9 + 6 to help solve 19 + 6 and 29 + 6), addition and subtraction number stories, and other skills that were taught in unit one.

NECAP and Parent Conferences

Today begins our NECAP testing block. We will be testing each morning for about 2 hours starting today and extending through next Tuesday.

Field Trip

Hello again everyone,
This is another update about our field trip. Chaperons have been selected for the trip this week. I picked those names out of our "fair bin". Those parents will be informed today or tomorrow. If you don't hear from me then unfortunately you were not picked for this trip. I am happy to say that there will be other chances for you to come along on future trips this year.

Tall Ship Trip this Friday

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that we will be taking a walking field trip to the pier this coming Friday, October 7th. The trip will be about 1:30 long and will include a tour of the tall ship coming into town. There will be an $8.00 fee per student for the tour. We need the signed permission slips which are being sent out to be returned by this coming Wednesday, October 5th. Sorry for the short turn around time with that.
Also, space is limited on the ship so unfortunately we will only be able to take one chaperon per class. Please let me know if you are interested in coming along and I will pull a volunteer from a hat in front of the students to keep things fair.

Tests this week

We will be having two assessments this week. Both assessments will be on Thursday. One test will be our first math test of the year on unit 1. We will also have a quick quiz about why we need the sun. We reviewed this information Monday.
1. It gives us light
2. It gives us warmth
3. It helps plants and trees grow with provide us with oxygen and food.

Spelling Tests

I seem to be having difficulty remembering to put study for spelling test on the homework portion of my blog each Thursday but just so everyone knows going forward, there will be a spelling test every Friday even if I have forgotten to mention to study.

Parent Helpers

Hi Everyone, this year as part of math centers each day from Monday through Thursday one center will involving reviewing math facts. This means addition, subtraction, and multiplication. I run math centers from 1:00 - 2:00 those days and I was wondering if their might be any parents who would like to come in and help. I already have a parent that has agreed to help out each Monday but if their are any parents that would like to help another day please let me know. Stickers in Student Planners

I wanted to let parents know the meaning of the stickers they should be seeing in their student's planner each night. At the end of every day students are given a color sticker to correspond to their behavior that day. If they have a green sticker then they had great behavior. Blue means they had a good day but needed a reminder of the directions. Yellow means they need two reminders and red would mean they had a many reminders that day.

Planets Quiz

There will be a short quiz this Thursday on the planets. For the quiz the students should know the order of planets from the sun. I have shared with this this trick for remembering:

Even though I have included Pluto as part of the list above it is of course no longer considered a planet. Students should know this is because of its small size.

Science Quiz

On Thursday of this week the students will be having a science quiz on the parts of a crayfish and bess beetle. They will have a study guide with them tonight and should study for Thursday.

Unit 8 Math Test

Native American Show

Soon you will be getting an invitation from your student informing you about our Native American show. The show will be a culmination presentation in which students will display the work they have done throughout the unit. The students will have their work set up to display from 1 -1:45, next Friday, April 1st. You may come at any time during that period to see the work of your child and their classmates.

Unit 6 Math Test

Our Unit 6 Math test will be this coming Monday, March 13th. The students will be completing a study guide in class today and that guide will go home with them to study for the test on Monday.

In addition to studying for the test this weekend it is possible that some students will need to finish up some work from the classroom at home as well. This is not something I usually like to do but we have other projects that we need to start next week so I'd like to have these projects finished by then.

Books and Boxes

This is a reminder to you that book report books should be completed by the time we return from February Vacation. At that time we will be starting the report portion of the project. For the report we need an empty cereal box from each child so please remember to bring those in.

Book Report

We will soon be starting a book report to be completed mostly in class. The students will chose a book from a group that I have compiled. Each student will be responsible for reading their book in class at silent reading time. I would like to have students finish reading their book by the time they return from February break, so they might need to do some reading at home as well. The book report itself will then be constructed in class. It is going to be a cereal box book report so each student will need to bring in an empty cereal box with them sometime before February break.

Unit 5 Math Test

Our Unit 5 math test will be tomorrow, 2/9/11. There will be a study guide going home tonight with the students like always. The questions on the test will look very similar to some of the questions on the review.

Report Cards

New Reading Log

As of this week, the students will be working on new reading logs at home each night. The new logs will be handed in to me each Monday so that I can look at the previous weeks reading. This will help both the students and myself. It will help the students because they will have a chance to make up for a forgotten night of reading at some other point in the week. It will help me because it will give me more time in the morning to work with students now that I don't have to check the logs daily.
The new log requires the student to write down something they thought about their reading each night. They can write a thought about why they liked or disliked a character. They can write a prediction they might have or a connection to something else (another book or a life event). I am not looking for long response, just a sentence or two at most.

Math Facts

Hi Everyone,
As we move into the new calendar year I wanted to update you as to how the class is progressing with math facts. As a class we will now focus our attention on the multiplication facts. So feel free to be practicing with your child at home on a nightly basis. A suggestion would be to start with the 0, 1, 5, and 10 facts and then move on into the other sets of facts taking one at a time. Our current math unit focuses on math facts and once the unit is up we will begin to take multiplication fact checks on a regular basis.
Now, although we are beginning to focus on multiplication it does not mean that students will now longer see addition and subtraction practice. If you feel that your child still needs additional practice in making their addition and subtraction facts more automatic please continue to practice those at night along with their multiplication (not instead of multiplication).

Social Studies Test

There will be a Social Studies test this Friday on the Woodland Indians. The students will complete some review work on Thursday and will bring home a completed review sheet with them on Thursday Night. Please make sure that your child studies the review that night. The test will look very similar on Friday.

Field Trip

Cleaning Wipes

This post is to ask if you wouldn't mind sending in some Clorox Wipes (or any other brand). As the temperature gets colder and the heat in the building kicks on the germs get that much worse in the classroom. If you could send in some wipes then we can use them to help keep the surfaces of the classroom clean.

spelling this week

Hi everyone, Happy Thanksgiving Week! This week because it is a short week we will not be having our normal spelling lesson. Instead we will be doing words connected to our Native American Unit. There will still be a test this Wednesday but the homework assignments will be a little different this week. Starting tonight with 3x each instead of the boxes.

Musical Instruments

I have sent home a letter describing the upcoming science project that the students will be completing in class. Please be sure to read this letter as it explains what the project is, when it will start, and the materials that will be needed. Each student will need to send in the materials they will need to build their instrument. The materials can start coming into school this upcoming Monday, November 22nd.

Math Facts

Please be practicing math facts with your child at home on a regular basis. In class we have focused are practice on the addition and subtraction facts up to 10. We will be expanding that practice to include facts for addition and subtraction facts to 20. After winter break we will be working with multiplication facts so if your child has a strong grasp on their addition and subtraction feel free to get them a head start with multiplication.

Unit 2 Math Test

Tomorrow, November 4th, we will be having our Unit 2 Math test. Students worked on some review questions today and have brought home a study guide with them. Some students have finished the review at school and you can make up some new questions along the same lines for those students to study. Other students have not finished the review, if that is the case you can have them finish the review and then check it to make sure they are understanding the types of questions being asked.

Reading Groups

Next week the class will begin reading some selections in small groups. Each group will be reading a book at an appropriate instructional level. Each child's group will meet with me about 3 times a week. On days that they are not meeting with me to read they will be either working on an assignment to go along with the reading or doing some independent choice reading.

Upcoming Quiz and Test

We will be having to assessments in the next few days. The first will be a brief science quiz on Friday. The quiz will focus on what causes sound and how the pitch of a sound can be changed.
Students should remember that sound is caused by vibrations and that the longer an object is or the longer the air column of an instrument the lower pitch it makes. Students should also remember that the ear is made of three parts. The inner ear, middle ear, and outer ear.
We will also be having a Social Studies test on Friday. A review sheet will go home on Thursday. Please be sure and go over the is sheet with your child so they are ready for the test on Friday.

Pumpkins and Stories

Hi Everyone,
This year to get into the fall and Halloween spirit we will be doing some pumpkin activities on Friday October 29th. In order to successfully do the activities planned we will need at least 10 pumpkins. I fully intend to bring in the small pumpkins myself if we don't have any others. However, if you have an extra pumpkin that you wouldn't mind allowing the class to use that would be great. Unfortunately, I can not say that the pumpkins you send it will be brought back home. Some of the planned activities will involve cutting into the pumpkin.
We also plan on listening to some appropriately scary stories that Friday. So, if you have any stories on CD or tape that you wouldn't mind lending us for that day, that would also be great.

Unit 1 Math Test

We will be having our first Math test tomorrow, October 13th. The test will be on Unit 1. In class today the students completed a review sheet that has problems very similar to the ones on the test. They should study that sheet in preparation for the test.

NECAP

This week we will be having our NECAP testing. The testing will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Each day we will have a morning test session and an afternoon session. The reading test will be both sessions Tuesday and the morning session Wednesday. Math testing will be Wednesday afternoon and both sessions Thursday. Please make sure your child gets a good nights sleep and a healthy breakfast to help them be successful on their test.

Mystery Projects
